 It is often the case that our clients have ample property on very steep slopes—and they come to us to tame these hillsides. These Berkeley homeowners wanted a place to enjoy the amazing city views, as well as raise fruits and vegetables. We designed a series of stairs and paths to connect the home to the garden. A stone patio features an arbor and a cozy fire pit. Farther along the path is a hammock arbor, the perfect place to read a book and take in the view. The garden is filled with flowers and edibles, making a feast for local butterflies, bees and hummingbirds. The landscape now surrounds the entire house, making it possible for the homeowners and their guests to discover all kinds of natural surprises—from berries to butterflies—along the path.
