This entertainer’s Eden in the Oakland Hills is among our favorite projects. A sliding glass wall opens onto a stone patio showcasing a dramatic cantilevered stucco fireplace that sports a built-in succulent planter and a stone bench. We used the natural slope of the garden to create an outdoor kitchen and dining area just a few steps up, echoing the multiple levels of the home. A mature Raywood Ash and colorful plantings separate these more public spaces from the quiet patio off of the master bedroom, where a gently trickling fountain accentuates the feeling of privacy. In the front, we replaced dangerous entry stairs with curving stone stairs and retaining walls. A rich mixture of hardscape materials and unique plants are the perfect foil to the homeowner’s eclectic taste.
